Tournament Format at Our Southeast Michigan Golf League

Welcome to Southeast Michigan’s premier golf league. Most tournaments in our Southeast Michigan golf league are 18-hole events played on weekend mornings at top-tier courses throughout Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Some tournaments feature afternoon starts for scheduling flexibility. While most events use stroke play format, our Southeast Michigan golf league also offers Match Play, Stableford, team scrambles, and even partnering with the Pros on the PGA, Senior Tour, and LPGA.

Unlike traditional weekly leagues at a single course, the Mulligan Tour takes you across 37+ courses throughout Southeast Michigan—from Livonia and Plymouth to Troy and Sterling Heights, Canton to Shelby Township.

Flexible Tournament Schedule: Play Your Way

You control your schedule in The Mulligan Tour. You’re not obligated to play all tournaments—register for as many or as few events as fit your calendar. Some members play three tournaments per season, others play thirty. It’s entirely up to you.

Registration deadlines ensure fair planning. All entries received before each tournament’s deadline are guaranteed entry. This helps our Southeast Michigan golf league properly plan tee times and pairings across courses in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.

Understanding the Mulligan Tour Handicap System

Fair Competition Across All Skill Levels

Q-School Phase (First 3 Tournaments):
New members to The Mulligan Tour start in “Qualifying School.” Your first three tournament scores establish your baseline handicap across different Southeast Michigan courses.

Temporary MTHI (Tournaments 4-10):
After three events, you receive a temporary MTHI used for tournaments 4 through 10. This gives the system time to accurately assess your ability across various Southeast Michigan golf league courses and conditions.

Mature MTHI (After 10 Tournaments):
Once you’ve played 10 events in The Mulligan Tour, you achieve a mature MTHI calculated as:

MTHI = Average of 5 lowest handicap differentials from last 10 events × 0.85

A handicap differential is generated each time you complete 18 holes at any Mulligan Tour tournament across Southeast Michigan.

Why We Don’t Use USGA Handicaps:
The Mulligan Tour plays by more relaxed, recreational rules than USGA competitions. Every member of our Southeast Michigan golf league establishes their MTHI through actual tournament play at our 37+ courses. Your MTHI adjusts only through Mulligan Tour events—outside rounds are considered practice.

See our Rules and Regulations for complete details about playing rules in The Mulligan Tour.

Tournament Structure Across Southeast Michigan

Three-Division Across Wayen, Oakland, and Macomb Counties

Our Southeast Michigan golf league operates three regional divisions, each hosting regular season tournaments and division championships. Additional tournaments (majors) are independent of divisions and open to all members.

You don’t formally join one division. Members of the Mulligan Tour can play in any tournament regardless of division. However, playing mainly in one division improves your standing on that division’s Money Standings, as well as, qualifying for end-of-the-season events like the Divisional Championships, Division Bell and our Ryder-Cup event – the Commissioner’s Cup.

Central Division serves Wayne County and western Metro Detroit with tournaments at courses in Livonia, Plymouth, Canton, Belleville, Romulus, and Salem Township.

East Division brings Southeast Michigan golf league competition to Oakland and Macomb counties—Troy, Rochester, Sterling Heights, Clinton Township, Shelby Township, Farmington Hills, and West Bloomfield.

West Division focuses on western Wayne County communities.

This structure ensures you can play Southeast Michigan golf league tournaments close to home while competing against the best golfers across all three counties.

Professional Statistics Tracking

Every tournament in our Southeast Michigan golf league records data on multiple playing statistics. Stats are maintained and published throughout the tour season, letting you track improvement across different courses in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.

Statistics We Track:

Driving Accuracy (FH) – Percentage of fairways hit per number of fairway holes. A fairway is hit when your tee shot comes to rest on the fairway at Southeast Michigan golf league courses.

Greens in Regulation (GiR) – Percentage of greens hit per 18 holes. A green is hit when you reach the putting surface:

  • In 3 strokes or less on par 5 holes
  • In 2 strokes or less on par 4 holes
  • With the tee shot on par 3 holes

Putting Average (P) – Average number of putts per 18 holes. A putt is any stroke taken when the ball is on the putting surface (fringe is not included).

Strokes Gained Putting – Your putts versus the field average. A score of -1.4 means you were 1.4 strokes better than the Southeast Michigan golf league field average for that tournament.

Net Scoring Average – Your average net score for 18 holes across all Southeast Michigan courses played.

Net Eagles – Average number of net eagles per 18 holes (marked with a triangle on scorecards).

Net Birdies – Average number of net birdies per 18 holes (marked with a circle on scorecards).

Pre-Formatted Scorecards

For each Southeast Michigan golf league tournament, scorecards are provided already formatted to document statistics. Scorecards also arrive with “strokes given” pre-calculated on each hole based on your MTHI.

Example: A player receiving 23 strokes (12 front, 11 back) gets 1-2 strokes per hole based on hole difficulty, automatically calculated for every tournament at Southeast Michigan golf courses.
