About Mulligan Tour: Common Golf League Detroit Questions

The Mulligan Tour has been Metro Detroit’s premier competitive golf league since 1999. With 27 years of history, 120+ active members, and 37+ partner courses across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, we offer the most comprehensive golf league experience in Southeast Michigan. Unlike national franchises, we’re locally owned and operated in Livonia, Michigan—your neighbors who’ve built the region’s most trusted competitive golf community.

The Mulligan Tour is a recreational golf league designed to deliver the PGA Tour experience for weekend golfers. Open to men, women, juniors, and seniors of all skill levels, we stress “recreation” over pure competition. Our Rule #1: Have fun. We organize 43 weekend tournaments annually at 37+ championship courses throughout Metro Detroit, from Pine View in Ypsilanti to Cherry Creek in Shelby Township.

Unlike traditional weekly leagues at a single course, Mulligan Tour lets you play 37+ different courses across Metro Detroit. Unlike national tours, we’re locally owned in Livonia with 27 years of Michigan golf history. We offer the most format variety (stroke play, match play, scrambles, Stableford, team events) and the largest course network in Southeast Michigan. Plus, our three regional divisions (Central, East, West) ensure you always play close to home in Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw or Macomb counties.

Since May 29, 1999—making us Metro Detroit’s longest-running competitive golf league. We’ve outlasted every similar league by focusing on what matters: authentic tournament golf, fair competition, and building a community of passionate golfers across Southeast Michigan.

Tee selections ensure fair competition while maintaining the challenge that makes tournament golf rewarding.

Handicaps & Rules: Golf League Detroit Questions

All players earn a Mulligan Tour Handicap Index (MTHI) based solely on scoring in Mulligan Tour events at Mulligan Tour events.

Q-School (First 3 tournaments): You’re in “Qualifying School” while the system establishes your baseline.

Temporary MTHI (Tournaments 4-10): After three events, you receive a temporary handicap used through tournament 10.

Mature MTHI (After 10 tournaments): Your handicap = average of 5 lowest handicap differentials from last 10 events × 0.85.

A handicap differential is generated each time you complete 18 holes at any Mulligan Tour tournament. This system has been refined over 27 years to ensure fair competition across all skill levels at Metro Detroit courses.

Read the complete Player Handbook

Because the Mulligan Tour plays by more relaxed, recreational rules than USGA competitions, USGA handicap indexes aren’t used. Every new player establishes their MTHI through actual tournament play at our 37+ courses. Your MTHI adjusts only through Mulligan Tour events—outside rounds are considered practice.

This ensures everyone competes under the same handicap system calibrated specifically for our recreational-friendly rules.

Our relaxed rules keep golf fun for recreational players while maintaining competitive integrity:

Optional mulligan – First tee only
No stroke-and-distance penalty – For out-of-bounds or lost balls
Lift, clean, and replace – In fairway or rough (within 6 inches)
Move ball 6 inches – To improve lie anywhere except greens
3-putt maximum – Pick up after missing the second putt
Quadruple bogey max – Per hole (prevents blow-up holes)
